DESPITE RATE HIKES, INDIA RECEIVES MAJORITY OF H-1B VISAS

Despite a hike in fees, India continues to receive a considerable share of the United States government’s H-1B visas. According to US Ambassador to India Richard Verma, who was present at the recent “The Future is Now: From COP21 to Reality” conference in Hyderabad, India receives roughly 70 percent of H-1B and L1 visas – a concerning number considering their rising costs.

Under the 9/11 Health and Compensation Act, the US now charges a $4,000 fee on certain categories of H-1B visas and $4,500 on L1 visas. As a result of this hike, almost all Indian IT companies would be paying roughly $8,000 to $10,000 per H-1B visa issued, equating to roughly $400 million in annual costs to India’s technology sector.

“We understand the concern about the fee hike,” Verma said. “We also know this is an important part of travel and commercial enterprise in the United States. And again, there is an increase in the number of visas issued, in fact, there is a slight increase.”
