The US Department of State has released an update on its Visa Interview Waiver program which supersedes the Interview Waiver Update of February 18, 2025. Effective September 2, 2025, all nonimmigrant visa applicants will generally require an in-person interview with a Consular Officer with the following exceptions:
- A-1 or A-2 Diplomats, Foreign Government officials and immediate family members;
- C-3 Transit Visas except attendants, servants or personal employees of accredited officials;
- G-1 through G-4 International Organization Employees;
- NATO-1 through NATO-6 NATO officials and employees and their immediate family members;
- TECRO E-1 Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office Treaty Traders;
- Business Visitors renewing full validity B-1, B-2, B1/B2 visas or a Border Crossing Card/Foil within 12 months of the prior visa’s expiration.
To be eligible for an interview waiver, Business Visitor applicants must meet the following criteria, including that they:
- Apply in their country of nationality or residence;
- Have never been refused a visa, unless such refusal was overcome or waived; and
- Have not apparent or potential ineligibility.
Please note that Consular Officers may still require in-person interviews on a case-by-case bases for any reason.
