Update on Sex Markers in US Passports

As of January 20, 2025, the U.S. government will no longer issue U.S. passports or Consular Reports of Birth Abroad (CRBAs) with an X marker. Moving forward, all passports will be issued with an M or F sex marker that must match the passport holder’s biological sex at birth.

Applications received by the Department of State requesting an X marker or a sex marker that differs from the sex marker at birth will be delayed, and applicants may receive letters requesting additional information.

Please note that previously issued passports that include an X marker or a sex that is different than the sex at birth will remain valid until their expiration date.

The updated online passport application form filler can be accessed here.
